A Few Words in Support of Transsexual People

It was a surprise to me recently to hear that transsexual people, especially trans women, don't live all that long....  It seems to be worse outside of North America where they might not receive a legal status and proper ID cards, and it affects their lives significantly.  Many trans people attempt suicide and some get murdered.  They have certain health problems, including heart disease, lung cancer, and HIV-related diseases.  As far as I understand, research hasn't concluded if the hormone treatments have an effect on their health?  In Argentina, most of the transsexuals live in poverty and they resort to prostitution to get by.

If the laws and the health care systems allow people to do sex changes, we pretty much have to accept them, in my opinion.  I believe we normally should accept people where they're at, and the transsexuals shouldn't be an exception.  Their health and perhaps their living conditions would improve to some degree.
