Gay Seniors
Have recently read an article from a local newspaper about gay and transgendered seniors who are having a hard time. There was also a film produced in the USA about this subject. In Canada, the legalizing of gay marriage hasn't taken away all the prejudice around homosexuality [and it probably won't]. Some seniors who were "out" earlier have gone back into "the closet" because they're afraid of prejudice and discrimination among their caregivers. It's also common that gays have been alienated from their families; and they may not have children to care for them. It's a sad situation! But one suggestion made was that these seniors should have a support network among themselves.--They could relate to others who live with the same circumstances. It's also difficult because these people grew up in a time that was a lot less accepting of homosexuality, even if they found some relief later on. As for the rest of us, we can consider if enough has yet been done to improve the lives and living conditions of gays? [Should we sit back and say we're done?]
